An Indigenous Psychological Exploration on the Concept of“sui”in Chinese Folk Context

Abstract: The relationship between “innate nature” and“education” has been an eternal theme of psychology. While behind of this academic dispute over which takes the leading position, researchers often ignore such a fundamental issue of how ordinary people comprehend the relationship between the two. It is,therefore,necessary to reveal these concepts from their perspective in the folk context.“Sui” is a common psychological concept in the Chinese folk context,similar to heredity in meaning and suggestive of“who one has inherited this of that from” . It was a fuzzy and intuitive concept formed by the majority of the Chinesespeaking people based on their everyday observation and their own worldly experiences before the Western genetics was introduced to China. It has directional characteristics to extract“sui”from the Chinese folk context,promote it to be a indigenous psychological concept,and to use it to enrich the concept bank of the “Chinese psychology” . This effort represents a transformation of the indigenous Chinese psychology toward the“substantial psychology” . In this process, work needs to be done to clarify the meaning of“sui”and other similar words or concepts,and analyze its indigenous psychological implication and related theoretical issues.
