Abstract: Besides the image of perfect modern women, Ling long constructed a negative image of men and condemned them severely. Dominated by the oppression/resistance logic of female discourse, men were constructed as an abuser and women rebelled against men through their discourse carnival. However, discourse carnival cannot solve the realistic problems which women faced. The construction of negative male image of Ling long revealed the complex attitudes when metropolis female in the face of men during 1930s, as well as the dilemma they faced when they sought for independence under the stimulation of consumption, mass media and foreign culture.
