Abstract: John Fryer’s writing competition(1895)was the most mystical case in the study of late Qing literature since the 162 novels have been lost in the past hundred years.Fortunately,these works have been found and published in 2011.The difficulty of the study,nevertheless,primarily rests on the obscurity of the authors.So this essay is one of aseries of essays that focus on those competing authors and analyzes the text and context of the authors’ life and works.The paper sheds light on the life of a competing author Yang weixi and takes a deep investigation on the artistic achievemen tof his story The New Age Novel in three aspects,the illustration,the structure and the theme of the Sina-west comparison.
