Abstract: Characters in narrative works fall into two classes of “the functional ones” and “the aesthetic ones”. Functionality and aestheticism of the characters in narrative works usually adhere together, with the only difference that different works stresses on different ones. It is a reasonable and effective ploy to combine the analytical methods for functional ones and for aesthetic ones in interpreting them in narrative works.

Key words: narrative text, characters interpretation, functionality, aestheticism
