It is worthy retrospecting the reception of Nietzsche’s works in 1902-2000. The first appeared between 1918 and 1925 with Nietzsche drawing attention of many men of letters and philosophers, some of whom became the founders of modern Chinese thoughts during and after May Fourth Movement in 1919. After 1925 Chinese intellectuals disappointedly witnessed the failure of Nietzsche’s“transvaluation of all values”. The second phase began at the begin? ning of Anti-Japanese War(1937)and culminated in 1940-41. The passion for Nietzsche was kindled at the third time in 1978. As a result, all kinds of articles, books and translations emerged in 1980s. If the first " Nietzsche-fever" was characterized by the effort at the wholesale "transvaluation of all values",mostly in connection with the ancient Chinese tradition, and the second by the renaissance or awakening of the Chinese nationalist spirit, the third one was connected with the conflict of existentialist values with the nationalalist ideology represented by the Guomindang in Taiwan, and far more obliquely against the moist interpretation of Marxism in the Mainland.

Many new topics have arisen in contemporary studies of Zhang Ailing(Eileen Chang)as more of her writings were recently discovered. Viewing Eileen Chang at Zero Degree responds to many of those new discoveries.First,“zero degree”indicates an objective attitude in studying Zhang Ailing; yet one cannot avoid his or her subjectivity in doing so. Therefore, the close and intimate stances that many contributors of the volume adopt do not mean to reject objectivity, but exemplify an auto- reflectivity in the dialectics of the subjective and the objective. Second, many contributors’attention to Zhang’s“later style,”that is,a style that is no longer marked by flourish images but instead characterized by a plain but studious way of writing, signifies a shift in her personal experience from huge popularity in Shanghai to unknownness in the US. Third, publication of Little Reunion subverts some of our previous understandings of Zhang and inspires new approaches to the studies of Zhang. Situating Viewing Eileen Chang at Zero Degree within the genealogy of the studies of Zhang Ailing at home and abroad will broaden our horizons in investigating Zhang Ailing.

Both the property and personal rights are the basic rights of the accused, however,in coercive dispositions where rights are vulnerable to powers, the institutional design of China’s criminal procedure law places more weight on personal rights protection than on property rights protection. This design is not only detrimental to the defendant’s property rights, but also hinders the fairness and justice of criminal procedures and the credibility of the law enforcement. The criminal procedure law’s lack of due emphasis on property rights protection is closely connected with the constitution’s failure to give equal protection to both personal rights and private property rights. To make up this flaw of China’s criminal procedure law,it is necessary to establish a judicial review procedure for property coercive disposition;include into the coercive system such disposition actions as distraint, seizure, and freezing;more clearly define the essential conditions and set a preliminary time limit for coercive disposition of properties;and establish a new relief mode for property right whereby the coercive disposition can be waived through warrant.
