Abstract: In dealing with the questions confronting grass-roots writing, people should discriminate the relation between “pure literature” and grass-roots writing. Notwithstanding their different orientations, they are in agreement in some respects. Grass-roots writing cannot ignore the result of “pure literature” in its exploration into the forms. As to their relation, only by drawing fully the lessons and the experiences from “left-wing literature” can grass-roots writing have a better development.

Key words: grass-roots writing, “pure literature”, realism, tradition of left-wing literature
