    As a sociological concept,“grass roots” ought have nothing to do with “pure literature”. But viewing it from the retroanalytic angle of the mentality, the uncorelation between literature and society is the very product of literary conception, which took shape in the middle of 1980 and became increasingly narrower afterwards.In a certain sense, their established corelationship will enable the “pure literature”, which is being hypostatized day by day, to release new senses, and under the new historical conditions, to obtain its ethical, political and social nature that it formerly insisted on discarding.

    In dealing with the questions confronting grass-roots writing, people should discriminate the relation between “pure literature” and grass-roots writing. Notwithstanding their different orientations, they are in agreement in some respects. Grass-roots writing cannot ignore the result of “pure literature” in its exploration into the forms. As to their relation, only by drawing fully the lessons and the experiences from “left-wing literature” can grass-roots writing have a better development.

    The trend of grass-roots writing is related with the anxieties of contemporary intellectuals. So the so called grass-roots writing merely represents the fragments of miseries in the lower-class society, which can not reveals the true conditions of the lower-class society. In essence, the so called grass-roots writing continues to use the topics and patterns of pure literature, which results in many limits and shortcomings.

    Grass roots is a sociological concept. Grass-roots narration in the literary sense, as doomed by its internal contradiction, cannot become an effective category of a literary theory of criticism.Its emergence shows only the fact that the academicist criticism attempts to alter the embarrassing situation in which academic self-sufficiency and realistic concern are isolated from each other. But the attempt failed to achieve its desired effect, what is worse, it exposed the defficiency of the ethics of criticism.
