Abstract: Many new topics have arisen in contemporary studies of Zhang Ailing(Eileen Chang)as more of her writings were recently discovered. Viewing Eileen Chang at Zero Degree responds to many of those new discoveries.First,“zero degree”indicates an objective attitude in studying Zhang Ailing; yet one cannot avoid his or her subjectivity in doing so. Therefore, the close and intimate stances that many contributors of the volume adopt do not mean to reject objectivity, but exemplify an auto- reflectivity in the dialectics of the subjective and the objective. Second, many contributors’attention to Zhang’s“later style,”that is,a style that is no longer marked by flourish images but instead characterized by a plain but studious way of writing, signifies a shift in her personal experience from huge popularity in Shanghai to unknownness in the US. Third, publication of Little Reunion subverts some of our previous understandings of Zhang and inspires new approaches to the studies of Zhang. Situating Viewing Eileen Chang at Zero Degree within the genealogy of the studies of Zhang Ailing at home and abroad will broaden our horizons in investigating Zhang Ailing.

Key words: zero degree, Study of Eileen Chang, Eileen Chang, Little Reunion , little logic, auto-reflectivity, late style
