Intertextuality-based Translation of Expressions of Two Chinese Characters with Opposite Meanings

There is an abundance of expressions of two Chinese characters with opposite meanings, which mostly belong to a coordinate structure. Because of their sharp contrast and profound meanings, such expressions have become a complicated and interesting language phenomenon. Intertextuality emphasizes the relationship between the given text and all other texts and contexts related to it; the understanding of a text presupposes the acquaintance of both references within this given text and references of this given text to other relevant texts. Intertextuality theory provides translators with a brand-new perspective for rendering expressions of two Chinese characters with opposite meanings into English. In the process of intertextuality-based translation, it is necessary for the translator to seek intertextual marks in Chinese and English expressions and skillfully select some strategies to translate a given text.
