In 1930s there arose the then well-known “dispute between two Liang’s”. Superficially the dispute between Liang Shiqiu and Liang Zongdai was caused by personal feeling, but virtually it was caused by their entirely different conceptions of poetry. The dispute took place at a time when the new Chinese poetry was at the juncture of two roads leading from “non-poem” to “principle poem” and from “prosaicalization” to “poetic purification”. And it had rich connotations in the theoretical development of new Chinese poetry.

There in Mo Yan’s Red Kaoliang Family and two relatively independent minor stories——the story of Gen, the Swordplay 18 and that of Cheng, the Pockmarked. The two “Subtheme stories”, seemingly producing no effect on the “theme story”, exert a parallel explanatory effect on the theme of Red Kaoliang Family on one hand, on the other they are a complement to the theme at that. In fact they serve as a ponder over the limitations of folk life passion and a consideration about the human “animalization” under a certain system. The themes of the two minor stories conflict with that of Red Kaoliang Family, i.e. they manifest the limitations of the life force and the decisive function of social reality to life.

Weng Fanggang, poet and poetic reviewer of the Qing Dynasty, lived during the reign of the two emperors of Qianlong and Jiaging, both of whom attached importance to and praised and honoured knowledge and learnings, and what officially meant by so-called learnings was the extensiveness of knowledge accumulation. The premise for the advocation of “poems by learners” was the acknowledgement of the “flourishing age”, which also had something to do with the restoration of the cloze poems in the imperial competitive examination. It provided a way for poetic writers to avoid disaster at a time when literary inquisition prevailed, and it also served as a way for them to avoid what was vulgar and familiar. And furthermore, it conformed to the supreme ruler’s attachment of importance to “learnings” and “poetic education”.

Deng Xiaoping’s good-neighbourly diplomatic strategg is worked out by Deng himself in accordance with the change of international situation and the internal need to concentrate energy on economic construction. Starting from a strategic height and aiming at national interests, he stood for developing all-round good-neighbourly and friendly relations with neighbouring countries in the five principles of peaceful co-existence on the basis of independent sovereignty surpassing the differences in ideology and social systems.
