By examining Fang Yizhi’s outlook of life and death, we can find out that in his early life in order to resist invasion of other Chinese nationalities, on one hand he whole-heartedly advocated the Confucian national integrity by “die to achieve virtue”, on other hand, he positively adopted and reformed Taoist outlook of “whole life” by opposing the negative idea of “short of righteousness and bowing out no savage”. In his middle and later life, by combining Confucian “consistency between appearance and latency” with Tiantai Sect’s “insight into the three at the same time”, he created an unique theoretic system of “die with life, die without life and die through life”, which shows his academic tendency of “interchangeable between life and death”.

In his book
Chinese Art Spirit
, Xu Fuguan used “Art Spirit” to interpret Zhuang-zi, Which was done by no one before and caused heated argument. In fact, only after you learn the whole way of Xu Fuguan’s “Modern Interpretation” to Chinese culture, can you be possible to enter his words and thought world. The essence of Xu’s re-discover to Zhuang-zi is to advance Zhuang-zi’s “Nihility life” to “Art life”. Xu Fuguan accurately grasped the truth that Zhuang-zi pursues the free of spirit. Through understanding Zhuang-zi Spirit & Art Spirit, Xu learned that Zhuang-zi’s Mind is just the subject of Art Spirit, the spirit of Zhuang-zi’s“Tao” is just the spirit of art, Zhuang-zi’s achivement is the art life. Xu’s re-discover to Zhuang-zi didn’t misread Zhuang-zi.Just like what he said himself “Glimpsing Zhuang-zi’s truth”,Xu’s re-discover is very valuable.

Uniformity theory interprets that if human wants to be in the ideological height of “atman” and “forget oneself”, he should treat everything equally and relatively. According to Chuang-Tze’s thought, there is no basic difference among all the things in the world. They are with the characteristics of “unity” at the ideological height of “Taoism” and human and nature are a unity. The nature centrism claims to extend moral consideration to every creature, even to the nature, the theoretic basis of which is that the nature is also with intrinsic value. There are many differences between uniformity theory and nature centrism, but the two can affect each other and provide precious ideological source for the social development and human existence. On one hand, the uniformity theory is helpful in constructing relationships between human and himself, and among human beings themselves, on other hand, the claims of equal mind of the uniformity theory is the same as nature centrism in the effective coordination of the relationships between human and the nature.

The modality adverb “bu mian” is from verb phrase “to be unavoidable”, which can be further divided into four modality types. “Bu mian1”, used in early Qin period, means “be bound to be”, which is closest to the verb phrase “to be unavoidable” in modality. “Bu mian2”, used in the Wei and Chin period, means “have to”, which is emptier than “Bu mian1” in modality. “Bu mian3”, was used in Tang and Song periods, the verb phrase formed with which is related with psychological activity. “Bu mian4”, used in Song and Yuan periods, emphasizes the natural occurrence of an event with a sense of transition. The occurrence of the four types of “bu mian” one after the other shows the grammatical extension from shallowness to depth.
