Abstract: John Ashbery is the representative poet of American New York School which is a branch of the post-modernist poetry. In his poems, various post-modernistic factors are mixed together, by which Ashbery tries to excavate the essence of the poetic writing. This thesis focuses on the intertexuality, parody, and amused reading in Ashbery’s poems; makes super-text analysis and finally discovers that in Ashbery’s poems, the real meaning is lost in the infinite signifiers. Only by the absorption of and the comparison with the traditional poetry, can the real meaning of Ashbery’s poems be discovered.
